D MSN. APRN, FNP-C M.D. FACS M.D. FACS AU. D. Do You Have Chronic Sinusitis? Have you ever felt like you had a cold that wouldn't go away? Did you know that if you have symptoms that continue for more than 10 days or worsen after they start getting better, there's a good chance you have sinusitis, an infection or infammation of the sinuses. At The Ear, Nose + Throat Care Center, we specializing diagnosing and treating sinusitis through innovative, state-of-the-art procedures. Located at 27790 West Highway 22, Medical Office Center 1, Suite 27 in Barrington, our team of experienced physicians understand that sinusitis is one of the most difficult ailments that people struggle with. In fact, sinusitis affects more than 37 million people in the United States every year. The symptoms of sinusitis typically coincide with inflammation of the membrane lining of the sinuses, most of the time only one of the paranasal sinuses. In most cases, this inflammation begins with a bacterial infection from a cold. The body reacts to the infection through swelling that then blocks the channels that drain the sinuses. There are two types of sinusitis that occur from this swelling. Acute sinusitis occurs when the symptoms last for less than four weeks. Should the symptoms continue longer than 12 weeks, a diagnosis of chronic sinusitis may occur. An ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, or otolaryngologist, can help you lean what type of sinusitis you have and the best method of treatment. Recurrent acute sinusitis occurs when a person has four or more sinus infections (acute sinusitis) in one year but does not have symptoms in between those infections. The primary symptom of acute sinusitis is dloudy or colored drainage from the nose for up to four weeks, along with the addition of the following symptoms: Stuffy, congested, or blocked nose Pain, pressure, or fullness in the face, head, or around the eyes Long-lasting cold symptoms Symptoms that do not get better within 10 days of getting sick, or initially get better then worsen again If you are suffering from chronic sinusitis, a visit to The Ear, Nose + Throat Care Center could help. Initially, our team will discuss your history and look for structural issues. Structural problems usually include a deviated nasal septum (the nose is shifted to the side) or polyps (growths). If it is found that you do in fact have chronic sinusitis, we will come up with a treatment plan that best meets your needs and lifestyle. Treating chronic sinusitis is more difficult to treat than acute bacterial sinusitis. It's likely that you may have been sick for months and may have received several courses of antibiotics. Over time, the bacteria become immune to the antibiotics, and you may become allergic to certain antibiotics. Despite aggressive medical management, many patients with chronic sinusitis require surgical deaning of their sinuses. The Ear, Nose + Throat Care Center offers new techniques such as balloon sinus dilation make it possible to wash out the sinuses under local anesthesia in the office. Most patients have very little pain and return to work the day after balloon dilation. If traditional surgical methods are preferred, Endoscopic sinus surgery can be performed in the operating room under a general anesthesia. This surgery is done using a small camera through the nostrils. The natural sinus openings are identified and enlarged by removing blocked inflamed tissue in the area.
