In 1999 Baskin-Robbins cancelled hundreds of their smaller market franchises. Having invested in their store, inventory and equipment, some 34 of the newly disenfranchised owners banded together to form a new company, KaleidoScoops®, Inc.. As a about-usbusiness cooperative, based in Amarillo, Texas, the owners have many of the benefits of a franchise without all the restrictions. Instead of answering to stockholders, they answer to their membership.
