However, if your water source is from a private or municipal well,then you will definitely have a potential for sediment build up in your tank. A good practice is to drain approximately 1/2 gallon from your water heater every month. This is especially beneficial if your heater is new. Any particulates that find their way into your tank will settle to the bottom. With time they will solidify and form a mass. Many times you can actually hear a thumping sound in the tank when the burner is on. This is the sediment mass hitting the walls of the tank. The more sediment build up means it will take longer to heat up the water. The additional heat will eventually cause metal fatigue and result in a leak. At that point you have to replace the entire water heater. Another example of sediment build up is your humidifier. If you examine the filter after a heating season you will see all the debris build up on it. Sometimes the filter looks twice as big as a clean filter, and that is just from 3-4 months.
