"Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. Do You Run Out Of Hot Water? Adam Kem, Owner Official Heating & Cooling Most of the older homes with one bathroom usually had all the hot water that they needed. But with suburban growth and the con- struction of larger homes with multiple bathrooms this has become a common problem. Luxury bathrooms with two person tubs and showers with multiple jets can easily deplete a standard 50 gallon water heater in a few minutes. Some of these bathtubs need over 100 gallons of water and showers with 6-12 jets can use 15-20 gallons of water per minute. Obviously these systems require a separate boiler or an on demand water heater. The typical 4 bedroom, 1.5 bath home with normal plumbing fixtures should have no problems with a 50 gallon water heater. If the need for additional hot water arises, then you can go with a 50 gallon high recovery or 75 gallon tank. If you have a private well then sediment build up can deposit at the bottom of the tank. Over a period of 5-10 years this build up can displace some of the water capacity and it may take longer to heat the water. The longer that the burner has to be on the greater the chance of developing a leak in the bottom of the tank. With a new water heater it is a good practice to drain some water on a monthly basis to eliminate sediment build up.
