"Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business trom service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. How Is Your Humidifier? Adam Kem, Owner Official Heating & Cooling An integral part about heating our homes is to make sure we have the proper humidity level. For all of the benefits that we get from a humidifier, without proper maintenance, it can also cause a lot of problems. A humidifier can only function when a water supply line introduces water into the unit. The water line should always be connected to the hot water for best results. The water quality in your home has a lot to do with the amount of maintenance that the humidifier might need. Water supplied from Lake Michigan has the least problems and private wells have the most. The more sediment that is in the water results in more potential cloggings and leakage. Some common preventative tips: Always replace filters at the beginning of the season. If you have well water check it monthly for scale buildup. Make sure the inside of the humidifier is cleaned out and scale free. If the plastic drain line is old and brittle replace it. If the main drain flows horizontally across the floor it has to be flushed out to prevent sediment buildup. Make sure the water flow rate entering the unit is adjusted properly to prevent overflow. We recommend to all of our customers a battery powered leak detector that sounds an alarm and sends a text to your phone if it detects water.
