"Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. Does Your Home Have Vaulted Ceilings? Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling Many of the newer homes have one or multiple rooms that have cathedral or vaulted ceilings. They make rooms appear bigger be- cause of the extra volume. Aesthetically they really enhance a room but from a comfort level they can be challenging. With the cold weather upon us, many of our customers complain about heating these rooms. Everyone knows that warm air rises. Unfortunately that becomes a real comfort issue if you have a 25 foot high ceiling. Almost all of these homes have forced air heating systems with floor registers. Thus, most of that heat ends up at the ceiling and not in the sitting area (usually about 20 inches above floor height). There are several things that you can do to improve the comfort level in these rooms: Install a ceiling fan and reverse the air flow on low speed to bring the warm air back down. Make sure the room has a cold air return high on an interior wall and not down at floor level. If your furnace has a variable speed blower, set the thermostat to "Fan On" or "Recirculate". When the air is continuously moving most rooms become more comfortable. The ultimate fix is to install radiant heat under the floor (base- ment or crawl) but for most people the cost would not be justified.
