"Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. Is Your Furnace Ready? Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling Fall is upon us and this is a perfect time to make sure your furnace is safe to operate for the upcoming heating season. Safety inspec- tions are not only recommended by all the manufacturers but they should also be considered from the standpoint of maximizing the efficiency and safety of the equipment. This has been a hot summer and the A/C units had a good work out. However, without the blower motor from the furnace, there would be no cooling. Most people don't associate the furnace with their A/C unit but it is an integral part. A quality safety inspection of your furnace consists of the following: Heat Exchanger - During each cycle the metal expands when heated and contracts when cooled down. This constant molecular change results in metal fatigue, which can result in cracks. These cracks can allow carbon monoxide to enter your home. Blower Motor - Make sure that the wheel is clean to maximize air flow and check for proper amp draw. Inducer Motor Heavy run time can dry out the bearings which an result in seizure or loud noise. Check amp draw. Flame Sensor - Can get carbon build up or hairline crack which will result in no heat. Miscellaneous Items - Check filter, drain lines, limit switches, gas valve and ignition system. We all take our HVAC equipment for granted, but a little preventative maintenance can head off extensive repair bills.
