"Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business trom service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. What Size Furnace Should You Have? Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling Furnaces are sized based on BTU's (British Thermal Unit). The only definitive way to properly size a furnace is to do a Manual J Heat Load Calculation. Unfortunately, when replacing a furnace, too many peo- ple just guess at the size or base their choice on what the old furnace was. The ideal furnace is one that runs most of the time and maintains a uniform temperature throughout the house. There is a furnace on the market that does that, it is a 98% efficient modulating furnace. Be- cause this is relatively newer technology, most people do not have one. Design conditions for furnaces vary based on geographic areas. In our region we size equipment to heat a house to 70°F when it is -1° F out- side. Many installers sell oversized equipment on faulty information that it will keep the home more comfortable. If your furnace cycles more than 4-5 times per hour it is probably over- sized. This will result in higher gas bills, excessive wear on the equip- ment and most importantly a very uncomfortable and unevenly heated home.
