Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. Is Your Furnace Heating Properly? Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling Most homeowners think that as long as their thermostats reach the desired setting, then the furnace is working properly. In theory that is correct but it doesn't always mean that the furnace is performing to factory specifications. A regular safety inspection/cleaning is the only way to ascertain the operational condition of the furnace. Every manufacturer has a rating plate on their equipment that shows what the temperature rise should be. We measure the temperature on the return air duct and on the supply air duct. The difference between the two readings is called the temperature rise. This num- ber should be within the range that is listed on the rating plate of the furnace. If the temperature rise is below the rated amount then the dis- charge air from the floor registers feels cool. Also there is a chance for condensation in the heat exchanger which would cause prema- ture failure. If the temperature rise is too high, then the furnace could be short cycling which would result in the home not heating evenly and could also cause premature heat exchange failure. There are many factors that can effect the temperature rise, but as a homeowner the best preventative measure is to make sure the filter is always clean. That is the cheapest insurance to maintain a properly functioning furnace and A/C.
