How Comfortable Is Your Home? Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling During normal temperatures most of our homes are pretty comfortable. But when the temperatures dip into the negative range then your comfort level can definitely be affected. In some homes you may not be able to maintain your normal thermostat setting when the outside temperatures are sub- zero. Many of the older homes lack proper insulation and this results in a heat loss greater than what the furnace can regenerate. Here are some cold weather tips: Do not lower the nighttime temperature. Check to make sure the filter is clean. Close curtains and blinds at night. If you have cathedral ceilings (and you have a ceiling fan) run it on the lowest speed blowing up to force the trapped heat back down. Try keeping the furnace blower in the ON position to balance the temperature more evenly. Do not raise the thermostat to 75°or 80° because the furnace is not capable of heating your home any faster.
