Cold Weather Furnace Tips Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling When the outside temperatures fall into the low teens or sub-zero, your furnace will be cycling quite frequently. The more usage any product is subjected to, the greater the chance of a breakdown. To minimize any comfort issues make sure to do the following: O Have your furnace inspected prior to the harsh winter weather. Many potential problems can be resolved with a preventative maintenance inspection. Your equipment will also run more efficiently when properly cleaned and serviced. O Check your furnace filters on a regular basis to make sure they are clean. Do not use filters that are too restrictive, they will prevent the furnace from heating your home properly. O If you have a programmable thermostat you may want to leave it on "Hold" at nighttime. Otherwise, in sub-zero weather the furnace will have to run a long time to bring the house back to normal temperature. O On high efficiency furnaces make sure the PVC pipes are not being covered by snowdrifts because that would prevent the unit from running properly or not at all.
