What Does Your Water Smell Like? Adam Kerm, Owner Official Heating & Cooling Many customers complain about a rotten egg smell when they open any hot water valve in their house. This problem is usually asso- ciated with private wells as opposed to municipal. The rotten egg smell is called hydrogen sulfide and it is composed of hydrogen, sulfur and bacteria. The culprit is usually the anode rod that is in every water heater. Anode rods can be made from aluminum, zinc or magnesium. Their purpose is to protect the tank from corrosion. If a foul odor is no- ticed from the hot water then replacing the anode rod with a different metal usually resolves the problem. When replacing the rod it is also recommended to treat the tank with hydrogen peroxide or bleach. If all of the above have been tried and you still have a rotten egg smell, there is a product that is about 99% effective. It is called an impressed current anode. They are made from titanium and send a small amount of electricity into the tank to replace that produced by sacrificial anodes. Another benefit is that these units do not erode with time, they will protect your heater from corrosion indefinitely.
