"Ask Adam" Adam has been in the HVAC industry for over 40 years. He has been involved in all aspects of the business from service to sales. His main interest is in customer comfort. How Do You Operate Your A/C? Very frequently customers ask us "What is the best way to run the A/C?" The surprising fact is that many people have misconceptions on how to use their thermostats, fan cycling, etc. The following list highlights some of the most common myths: MYTH: Lowering the thermostat will cool the house faster. FACT: This is probably the biggest fallacy because the A/C unit needs time (based on outside temperatures) to remove the humidity and lower the temperature. There is no shortcut to accomplish this. A properly sized system can reduce the inside temperature by 2-3 degrees per hour (depending on outside conditions). If outside temperatures are in the 900 plus range, then you may not reach the thermostat set point. Adam Kern, Owner Official Heating & Cooling MYTH: Close vents in unused rooms to save money. FACT: This will not save money in any measurable way, but may cause an imbalance of airflow in other parts of the house. MYTH: Ceiling fans will cool a room. FACT: Not true, ceiling fans will circulate air and it feels cool to the skin but it doesn't change the temperature. MYTH: Duct tape seals air leaks. FACT: Duct tape only seals for a short time, then it dries out and falls off. In new construction the code requires foil tape. In existing homes we recommend Aeroseal patented duct sealing. MYTH: Keep furnace fan in ON position while running the A/C. FACT: Keeping constant fan in ON position balances the house more evenly.
