Currently we are at $1.24 per therm. The projections are that it could go up by another 25-35% or more in the next few months. So whatever your bills were last year, they will more than double this year. There are several things you can do to minimize this cost increase: Maximize your attic insulation to a minimum of R-38. Weatherproof your house to minimize heat loss due to cracks and holes around doors, windows and any pipes that penetrate the building envelope. OUse a setback thermostat when not at home and when sleeping. The biggest savings would be to upgrade your furnace to at least a 95% efficiency unit. A PVC pipe discharge temperature is around 100° F. A metal flue pipe furnace discharges around 350° to 400° F. That extra 300° is used to heat your home instead of going up the chimney.
